Barossa zone, 1987 to today
Following the 1986 Gawler & District football season only three clubs remained in the competition. Gawler Central, South Gawler and Willaston all successfully applied to join the Barossa & Light association for the 1987 season. With the Gawler clubs receiving the endorsement of the Barossa & Light clubs, a new league was ratified and entitled the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association.
The new competition consisted of ten teams, the three Gawler clubs were joined by seven Barossa & Light clubs. The new competition was branded as a ‘Super League’ and possibly because of the strong competition provided it was seen as irrelevant to play inter association matches.
Barossa Light & Gawler did not play their first interleague match until 1990 in the Country Foundation Cup against the strong Southern League and thrashed them by 87 points. Barossa Light & Gawler then defeated Mid South East and Tatiara by similar margins to reach the final. They played Eyre Peninsula in the grand final as an SANFL curtain raiser at Football Park and lost 11-12 to 6-11. Barossa Light & Gawler have continued to only play interleague matches as part of the South Australian Country Championships and the Mid North Landmark carnival.
The BL & G association has produced more than its fair share of AFL players since its inception in 1987. However, it is as a valuable recruiting zone for Central District where its true worth has been shown. Many BL & G players played significant roles for the Bulldogs during their golden era from 2000-2011 when they won nine SANFL flags.
