Broughton FL

Mid North zone, 1910 to 1980

Formation

The Broughton Football Association was formed in 1910 with the Koolunga, Brinkworth, Yacka, Gulnare and Redhill clubs as the foundation members. Spalding had also made overtures to the Broughton delegates to join the association but was reportedly refused admission due to the extra travel that would be imposed on the other clubs.

In 1951, the Broughton association was responsible for producing one of the most amazing seasons in the history of South Australian country football. Arch rivals Blyth and Snowtown played each other twice during the minor round of 1951 producing two very close results. The first meeting resulted in both Blyth and Snowtown scoring 7-11 apiece. The umpire, a former Victorian said it was the best game he had umpired in 20 years. In their second meeting just prior to the finals, Snowtown won by 2 points.

As Brinkworth had finished minor premiers, Blyth and Snowtown did not meet again until the grand final. Snowtown led the decider by 32 points at three quarter time but Blyth came home strongly with Paddy Kennedy calmly kicking the final goal of the match to level the scores with seconds remaining. The following week when Snowtown captain Chris Cooper tossed the coin it came down on its side in the mown grass, Cooper remarked ‘Surely that doesn’t mean another drawn game’. The game was close all day with a standard a lot higher than the previous week. As Chris Cooper called it, the final scores were Snowtown 11-15 to Blyth 12-9.

The following Saturday, Blyth and Snowtown headed off to Koolunga for the third straight week, rather boldly a close game was predicted. Everything was in place at Koolunga for the final to end all finals, even the oval had been mowed twice during the week. The scores were close all through the match and in the last quarter hearts were thumping when the scores were level on three occasions. Snowtown eventually drew clear to win by seven points.
