Mid North zone, 1905 to 1940
Burra was one of the earliest country areas to be playing football on a regular basis, with the first recorded match played in the 1870s. Burra formed a club in 1879 and immediately issued a challenge to the Clare Football Club. Obviously under prepared against a match hardened Clare team, Burra lost by four goals to nil. The next game was played five weeks later and with some training and a home ground advantage, Burra held Clare to a scoreless draw.
Kooringa and Aberdeen both formed clubs in 1891 although there was evidence of them playing each other from 1888. Redruth also had a team in the 1890s. A Burra Football Association was formed in 1895 by the Aberdeen and Kooringa clubs to regulate matches between themselves and combined matches against nearby towns.
Aberdeen Football Club contacted the Kooringa and Ramblers clubs with the idea of the association playing a series of matches to decide a premier club for the 1905 season. Football support had dropped off a little in the last few seasons and this was seen as a way of reviving enthusiasm. Kooringa and Aberdeen played the opening match for the premiership in 1905.
