Cardwell / Lakes District

Cardwell / Lakes District

Lower Murray zone, 1940 to 1954

Formation

The Cardwell Football Association was formed in 1940 with Keith, Tintinara and Coonalpyn as the founding members. Despite losing players to enlistments, the first season was a successful one but despite that, the association closed until the end of the war. The association re opened in 1945 and played for the Schapel Shield.

A punt kick by Roy Jones of Yumali in the 1946 preliminary final was measured as having traveled 85 yards. While Keith was a member of the Cardwell association, their B grade team played in the Tatiara B grade association. Cardwell merged with Lake Albert in 1949 adding Narrung, Meningie, Ashville and Cooke’s Plains to the association to form the Lakes District Football Association.
