County Eyre
Mid North zone, 1915 to 1947
Formation
Eudunda decided at their 1915 annual general meeting to the leave the Barossa & Light association because of a lack of funds and that they had lost a number of good players. It was moved that the secretary write to the Marrabel, Robertstown, Julia, Kapunda Ramblers and Mount Mary clubs with a view to forming an association. Robertstown and Julia accepted and joined Eudunda in forming the North Eastern association. The association lasted just the one season before being closed down due to the outbreak of WWI.
It was a case of deja vu when Eudunda dropped out of the Barossa & Light association in 1931 as its members suggested forming a break away association. Robertstown, Julia Pass, Sutherlands, Truro and Bagot’s Well were all invited to express their interest in joining a new association. As a result, the County Eyre association was formed with Eudunda, Robertstown, Julia Pass and Bagot’s Well as the foundation members.
In 1932, County Eyre lost to Norwood 22-11 to 2-6 at Eudunda. Star Norwood player, W A Scott lectured the County Eyre players after the match on the finer points of football. The Norwood Football Club presented a trophy to County Eyre’s best player, Reg Colbey.
When Eudunda played in Mid North in 1935 and 1936 their B grade team played in County Eyre under the title of Eudunda Rovers. Frank Golding & Jack Dermody, two former state footballers were appointed umpires for the 1938 County Eyre season.
There was no great effort to continue the County Eyre association beyond 1946. Eudunda were accepted by Mid North while Robertstown and Julia were affiliated with the Mid North B grade. Apoinga disbanded following the 1946 season with the majority of their remaining players joining up with Robertstown.
