Franklin Harbour

Eyre Peninsula zone, 1901 to 1961

Formation

One of the earliest recorded football matches in the district occurred at Millers Point in 1889. Football was played on a regular basis in the district leading up to the forming of an association in 1901.

In 1913, the Franklin Harbour association traveled across the gulf to play the Western Areas association. To make the trip worthwhile Franklin Harbour played a match against the Western Areas premier team Bute on the Monday which they won by 19 points. On the Tuesday they played the Western Areas combined team and won that match by 13 points after a sluggish first half. After a rest day, Franklin Harbour played Port Broughton on the Thursday which was lost in a mud bath with half the team turning up late. The final match on Friday was against Mundoora. Three previous matches and four nights of dining and dancing took its toll as Franklin Harbour just failed to make up a 12 point three quarter time deficit.

In 1921, a gold medal for the best all round player in the Franklin Harbour association was presented by the ‘Eyre Peninsula Tribune’. Readers of the ‘Tribune’ were invited to fill in a coupon provided by the paper to indicate their choice as best player in the association. The medal remained on display in the Commercial Hotel Billiard Saloon throughout the season until being presented to the eventual winner, Arnold Huxley of the Cowell club.

The opening match of the 1947 season coincided with the opening of the memorial gates at the Coolanie Recreation Ground. The ribbon cutting ceremony was performed by Mr D G Ramsey a former Miltalie resident.
