Gordon

The Gordon Football Association was formed in 1923 as a ‘Line’ football association which meant the three founding members, Taplan, Taldra and Noora were neighbouring railway sidings. Newly formed Nadda joined in 1926 and both Moonah Bore from the Peebinga Kingsford Football Association and Meribah from the Loxton Brown’s Well Football Association entered in 1928.

With the Depression beginning to take hold in South Australia’s rural areas, the Gordon Football Association was disbanded in 1929. Moonah Bore were absorbed by Meribah who returned to Loxton Brown’s Well . The remaining teams Nadda, Noora, Taplan and Taldra all united and entered Loxton Brown’s Well as the Gordon Football Club.

A charity match was played late in the 1929 season to raise funds for popular Nadda footballer Harry Stone. Mr Stone had been bedridden for four months following a serious car accident. The match was played between the North team representing Taldra and Noora against a South team consisting of Nadda and Taplan.

The finals scores were South 9-12 to North 6-7, the best players for South were R Carslake, L Falting, R Hondow, M Blood, H Zimmermann and L Pavy. Best for North were P Condon, L Edwards, J Cameron, S Schwerdt, H Boehm and R Ridley. The usual tea, dance and supper followed with the ladies providing baskets.

The Gordon Football Association made a special request to spectators who were expected to attend the game between Noora and Taldra in June 1927. They advised all gentleman supporters through the local media that the champion English boxer John Todd would be in attendance to settle all disputes between rival barrackers.

They were also told to bring no stones in pockets and asked that lady supporters attend the game without their hat pins. Dr Joske from Loxton will be visiting Taldra on the Monday after the game to attend all barrackers who may cross the path of Mr Todd.
