Mid North zone, 1910 to 1975
The delegates of the Auburn, Mintaro, Clare, Saddleworth, Manoora and Riverton Football Clubs met at Auburn in 1910 to form the Mid Northern Football Association. Although the new association immediately registered with the South Australian Football League, it adopted the rules and constitution of the Yorke Peninsula association. Auburn was chosen as the central point of the association and all association meetings would be held there.
Over 250 names had been registered by the six clubs as players in the new association. Although spectators could attend all matches free of charge it was estimated that the new association would inject over £100 into the economy of the district. The opening game of the association was played between Riverton and Clare.
In 1911, the football world was dealing with the difficulties of the handball rule and the Mid Northern association was just one of many country associations trying to comprehend it. The Auburn and Manoora clubs made the suggestion that handball be forgotten about and players be allowed to just throw the ball. This was seen as a way of helping the umpires and increasing the pace of the game. Manoora and Auburn officially put their proposal to the other clubs, who were favourable but were overruled by the South Australian Football League.
The Mid Northern Football Association became Mid North in 1933. Eudunda applied for entry in 1934 but were declined because of the extra traveling that would be required by clubs that were not very well off financially.
The 1939 season ended in controversy when Saddleworth protested their two point loss to Riverton following the grand final. Riverton player Ron Peters who played in the grand final was claimed to be ineligible as he had played in a city association during the season and was not a resident of the Riverton district. The decision was upheld 11-4 in favour of Saddleworth but referred to the SA Football League on appeal. The SA league dismissed Riverton’s appeal but Saddleworth requested that no winners name be added to the shield for 1939. At the 1940 AGM, the Riverton club moved that the inscription on the shield read ‘Won by Saddleworth on a Protest 1939’.
As football slowly resumed after WWII the Mid North association was inundated with new clubs wishing to affiliate. Many of the clubs joining up were only small and not up to the standard of the likes of Clare and Riverton. It was therefore decided to transform the B grade into an AII competition and give clubs the option on promotion and demotion depending on their performances from the previous season. This set up lasted until 1968 when the last stand alone AII club, Manoora merged with Mintaro.
