Mid Western

Mid Western

West Coast zone, 1913 to 1955

Formation

Football was first played in the Elliston district in the very early 1900s with matches played between Elliston, Colton and Sheringa. The small population and the long distances between towns restricted regular football interaction. A competition began shortly before WWI with Colton, Talia, Elliston and Sheringa competing. Little is recorded of the association and it lapsed with the outbreak of WWI.

Football was slow to resume after the war with Colton and Elliston not playing a game until 1922. A three team association was able to be created when the Kolballa club was formed in 1926. The competition carried on until 1929 when although a number of matches were played they were only on a social basis. As the depression began to take hold less football was played and by the late 1930s only Elliston were playing matches against Lock, Port Kenny and Marble Range.

Football began after the war with great enthusiasm in 1946, Elliston played regular matches against Lock, Streaky Bay and Port Kenny. The Mid Western association was formed in 1947 with Elliston-Sheringa, Colton Mount Wedge and Port Kenny as the founding members.

The largest crowd seen at the Elliston oval for many years witnessed the 1950 grand final. Eighty-two cars lined the oval boundary and umpire Rashleigh, who was in charge of the game, gave a good exhibition.

Prior to Mid Western accepting the Mail Medal, the association best and fairest player received the Robinson Medal. Kevin Mullan won all five Robinson Medals presented from 1947 to 1951. The Mail Medal was introduced in 1952 with Kevin runner up and then winning his only Mail Medal in 1953. Kevin was again runner up in 1954.
