Murray Mallee

Mallee zone, 1932 to 1940

Formation

The Central Murray Football Association was inaugurated in 1932 with the Swan Reach, Claypans, Nildottie and Copeville clubs as its founding members. The title was changed to the Murray Mallee Football Association in 1933.

Copeville came from 32 points down at half time in the 1933 grand final to defeat Claypans by 8 points and complete the season undefeated. 300 people turned up to watch the 1937 grand final between Galga and United at Claypans. In the 1940 grand final, the Swan Reach Natives had a good win with Jerry Mason kicking 7 goals in a best on ground performance.

Three Swan Reach players Baum, Lintern and Dunn were all reported in a 1937 match for fighting. They were suspended for 12 months, 6 matches and 4 matches respectively. Ray Lintern must have suffered somewhat of an epiphany as he sat out his six game suspension as he became an umpire in 1939.

In 1940, the Murray Mallee association played the Mid Murray association at Swan Reach. The visitors got away to a flying start and led by 42 points at quarter time. The Murray Mallee team fought back and acquitted themselves better in the second half. They pegged the score back and became more competitive to only go down by 31 points.
