Narracoorte FA

Delegates from the Narracoorte and Warriors Football Clubs met in April 1912 to discuss a proposal to pool their talents and form a three or four team association. Both clubs agreed to pay an equal amount to fund the new association.

A second meeting held a week later agreed to form three new clubs with a playing roster of 28 players each. The three clubs were named Kincraig, Centrals and Wanderers. A program of matches was drawn up which included matches where a combined Narracoorte team would play against neighbouring towns. Hynam were also interested in joining but made requests that could not be honoured so they withdrew their entry.

The Lochaber Football Club was also formed in 1912 and were successful in their request to use the Showgrounds oval where the Narracoorte association played all of their matches. Lochaber played matches against Hynam and Lucindale. Late in the season a combined Narracoorte team defeated a Port Adelaide B team by 2 points in front of 400 people at the Showgrounds. Narracoorte premiership team Centrals accepted a challenge from the Lochaber team at the end of the season however severe weather on the day resulted in a cancellation.

In 1913 the competition was revised with Kincraig maintained, and Lochaber and Hynam included. The three clubs were divided into districts with equal numbers of players to choose from. By 1914 it had become obvious that association football was not working and that it was in everybody’s interest that the Warrior and Narracoorte teams be reformed.

Another attempt was made to form a Narracoorte association in 1935 when football in Mount Gambier was in decline. While not a complete success the rebirth of the Narracoorte association would eventually lead to the forming of the Kowree Narracoorte association.
