Peebinga Kingsford / Karte & District

Mallee zone, 1926 to 1937

Formation

Football in the Peebinga area began in the early 1920s with both Karte and Peebinga having teams from 1923. When Kringin formed a team in 1926 an association was able to be formed with Mr A Menz elected as chairman. Medals were presented after a successful first season with Dick Marcus (Karte) being named best all round player, Ted Lafsky (Peebinga) as the cleanest player and Ray Hunt (Karte) as the most improved player.

In 1930 the association became Kingsford and Border to acknowledge the presence of a Victorian team, Bolton’s Bore. Times in the Mallee district were very tough in the early 1930s and the majority of the Bolton’s Bore team were unemployed farm workers. The all black jumpers that the new club were registered under were in fact dyed black sugar bags with armholes cut out. Berrook, another Victorian team, entered in 1931.

The association was renamed the Karte & District association in 1935, Parilla Well admitted two clubs and Peebinga amalgamated with Kringin. Karte completed the 1936 minor round undefeated and then scored a three goal win over Parilla Well in the second semi final. The two teams met again in the grand final and in a thrilling game the scores were tied when the final bell rang. Karte did not help their cause by kicking seven behinds to Parilla Well’s one solitary goal in the final quarter.

Karte requested that the replay be held a fortnight later however upon the casting vote of the president, the association ruled the game would be played the following week. With several key players missing for Karte including their captain Alan Mason, they battled manfully but lost the replay to Parilla Well by more than five goals.
