Northern zone, 1949 to today
The township of Woomera was established soon after WWII by the federal government as a defence and testing installation. Naturally, a football competition was formed soon after in 1948 with the founding clubs reflecting the nature of the Woomera facility. Works & Housing, Contractors, Koolymilka, Lines & Construction (LCPS), LWER (Long Range Weapons Experimental Range), RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force), RAE (Royal Australian Engineers – Army) all provided teams for the 1948 season.
The transient nature of the town meant that clubs came and went in a short period unless they built a strong membership base as Works and Village did. While the association was focused at Woomera, Koolymilka (43 Km) and Mount Gunson (64 Km) saw the association begin to expand.
With the establishment of the town of Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam project 80 kilometres from Woomera, the league was now able to enter a new phase in its history. The league became Woomera & Districts in 1987 to reflect the geographical position of the members clubs. By the mid 1990s all involvement from Woomera based clubs had ceased. In 2011 Woomera & Districts was renamed Far North with four of five clubs based at Roxby Downs with the isolated Coober Pedy some 450 kilometres away.
